Twilight Before Dawn

Twilight Before Dawn grew out of Kennith Maitland’s morning ritual in Palm Springs — the hours before sunrise spent on the studio patio, watching the desert sky transition from black to indigo to molten orange. It is in those liminal minutes, he says, that you can actually see the world preparing itself for the day ahead, layer by layer.

Working with poured acrylic and embedded glass, he built the painting in successive passes — first the deep ground, then the underlying chaos of black fragments, then the bright drips of color in cadmium, citron, and silver. Each line was poured by hand, allowed to find its own path across the canvas. The result is a painting that holds two opposite forces at once: the heaviness of the night and the urgency of the coming light. It is, in his words, “the painting I make when I want to remember what optimism feels like.”
