Abalone Shore is a meditation on the tidal margin where ocean meets land, rendered in actual abalone shell, sea-glass, sand, and resin. Kennith Maitland gathers and arranges natural materials directly onto the canvas, suspending them in layers of clear resin that catch and refract light like shallow water at low tide. Every shell, every grain of sand was placed by hand — a slow, contemplative process that mirrors the rhythms of the shore itself.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING

Abalone Shore began on the central California coast, where Kennith spent weeks collecting shells worn smooth by the Pacific. Each piece carries a memory of the place it came from — the salt, the wind, the way the light pooled in tide-pools at dusk.

Working in his Palm Springs studio, he reassembled those memories into a single composition, layering shell against sand against shimmering resin until the canvas itself seemed to breathe with the tide. It is a portrait of a coastline, but more than that, it is a portrait of attention — of what becomes visible when we slow down enough to see it.
